It does not need to be restated that music-based reality contest The X Factor
is a popular global franchise even away from the
well-known English-speaking versions, although given the nature of the
music industry they are the most popular in other countries, which means
that a crucial aspect of a one-off ‘worldwide edition’ of The X Factor in Indonesia was to recruit judges and talent from those versions.
Conceived by production company FremantleMedia Asia in celebration of a strong first series of X Factor Indonesia (aired on RCTI)X Factor Around the World
will be a celebratory show as opposed to a contest, though the singers
featured will be advised by a 5-strong judging panel including Louis Walsh (X Factor UK), Paula Abdul (formerly on X Factor USA), Daniel Bedingfield (X Factor New Zealand) and local panellists Anggun and Ahmed Dahni. For the performer list, the UK show will not be going all-out compared to their counterparts, sending only season 9 runner-up Jahmene Douglas, whilst X Factor USA will offer its first winner Melanie Amaro, and being able to do a little more based on reduced travel costs, X Factor Australia will send season 4 winner Samantha Jade and a group from that series, The Collective (who finished 3rd to Jade), amongst other acts from other X Factors being featured.
In addition, judges Bedingfield and Anggun will also have slots in the performance, while the ‘X Factor Indonesia Top 12′, led by winner Fatin Shidqia, will perform as a group during the broadcast. That selection of finallists have been recognised as a fast success in Indonesia, with 10 of the acts having secured record deals with Sony Music since the season ended in May. The show itself was notable for beating season 7 of Indonesian Idol in the ratings, and in the process becoming the country’s ‘highest-rated entertainment show’ with an average audience of 4.7m (albeit in a (developing) country of over 237m people).
Set to air on 24 August, the special is being seen as an experiment by Syco and FremantleMedia, with executives monitoring the performance of the show in order to see if the ‘Around the World’ format could do well elsewhere.
FremantleMedia Asia’s ‘managing director’ Paul O’Hanlon said of the concept: “This is the first time we have had an international panel for an Asian programme, which is a massive coup for us. X Factor Around the World in Indonesia has proven there is an appetite in the country for international artists who were showcased on local X Factors. Both FremantleMedia and Syco are excited about this special event for Indonesia. We are looking forward to seeing its performance and what opportunities may exist in the future.”
